The Issue: Elderly Malnutrition at Club Prior

About Elderly Malnutrition

What Causes Elderly Malnutrition?

  • Elderly malnutrition is caused by various physiological, social, and psychological factors, in addition to low levels of income and medications taken. See More

  • At Club Prior, there is a small budget for food, but what is purchased isn’t healthy for residents, it is often food bought in bulk such as chips and pretzels.

    • Residents of Club Prior are also able to bring in their own food to share with the other seniors, but they often only bring in sweets such as bars, cookies, cake, and other similar foods.

How Are Club Prior Seniors Harmed?

  • Elderly malnutrition results in numerous health problems, reduced ability to live a healthy and normal life, and an increased risk of developing depression. See More

  • A few residents that I've spoken to haven't eaten a full meal in months. Many residents at Club Prior do not have access to healthy, nutritional food, and this is often because they are low income and do not have the resources necessary to purchase nutritional food, which contributes to malnutrition.

This is the food available for the seniors who come to Club Prior on a typical day. This picture was taken by me during a visit on October 22nd, 2019. Food in this picture includes candy corn, cookies, donut holes, chips, and pretzels which all contribute to the seniors at Club Prior's unhealthy eating habits.
